TRADITIONAL BRACES vs INVISALIGN

Braces vs Invisalign > From an Orthodontist That Uses Both

If you are considering braces vs Invisalign to straighten your teeth, or your kid’s teeth, you may have lots of questions. Which is more effective? Which is more affordable? Ultimately, you want to choose the treatment that will do the job, even it it’s slightly more expensive. In the long run, you don’t want to have to fix your teeth again! So are braces or Invisalign the better choice for you or your kid?

Braces vs Invisalign: Getting Straight to the Basics

Both braces and Invisalign were designed to straighten teeth while improving your smile and oral health. Customers first began using Invisalign in 2000, so this treatment does not yet have the same history as braces.
Braces consist of metal brackets being glued to your teeth, and tied together by wires and tiny rubber bands. Nowadays, you can get brackets to more closely match your enamel color (making them more discrete), or you can get them in color to make a fashion statement with your mouth!
Invisalign, on the other hand, is designed to be invisible. Aligner trays made of smooth, comfortable, BPA-free clear plastic are worn over your teeth to subtly and gently move your teeth. Your specialist will use X-rays, pictures, and impressions to create a precise 3-D image of your teeth and to configure your aligner trays accordingly.

In Braces vs Invisalign, Which Will Work Best for You?

While both braces and Invisalign can help straighten teeth, they each have pros and cons. Take a look at the detailed braces vs Invisalign comparison chart below.
  Braces (irremovable)         vs         Invisalign (removable)
Metal-typically silver; can pay extra for color or enamel color Color Clear/invisible
24/7 for an average of 2 years, depending on patient needs Treatment time 22-24 hrs/day for 6 to 18 months, depending on patient needs
$1,800-$5,500 Cost Average of $5,000
Brush brackets and wires regularly while brushing teeth; water pick may be helpful. Maintenance Invisalign Cleaning system, or brushing and rinsing trays in luke warm water
About every month Follow up visits Change aligner trays every 2 weeks; visits every 4 to 6 weeks
Positioner or retainer likely needed ongoing, maybe only at night Follow up to treatment Positioner or retainer likely needed ongoing, maybe only at night
  • More effective for more complex issues
  • No temptation to leave them out, so less self discipline is needed for success
  • No extra cleaning steps required besides regular brushing and flossing
Pros
  • Invisible
  • Removable
  • No issues with food getting caught
  • No difficulty eating
  • No discomfort from wires
  • May have some pain, sores or discomfort from wires, brackets or tooth movement
  • May have some tooth discoloration or breakage
  • May have difficulty eating sticky, hard foods
Cons
  • May have discomfort from tooth movement
  • Must remove before eating or drinking anything but water
  • Must brush after each meal to avoid staining
Patients playing rough contact sports regularly NOT ideal for
Patients with:
  • bridgework
  • back tooth bite issues
  • the need to rotate canines or premolars
  • the need to move teeth vertically
  • lack of discipline to keep trays in for at least 22 hours daily

Clearly, in comparing braces vs Invisalign, it’s a tight race. If you’re an adult, or have a teen, who tends to be self-conscious, Invisalign may appeal to you. And the fact that it’s removable so you can eat, drink, brush and floss more naturally, may sound desirable. But if the idea of having to remove your trays for meals or while drinking anything but water seems inconvenent, Invisalign may not be the best solution for you. Plus remember, you should brush after each meal before putting your trays back in, to avoid staining.
Exact success rates for braces vs Invisalign are difficult to find, especially since Invisalign has not been around long enough to gather long-term data. Plus, Invisalign’s success depends almost entirely on the beholder. If you don’t wear them, they won’t work. With braces, you don’t have any choice in the matter!
Lastly, if you need to address issues with your back teeth, need to rotate teeth or move teeth vertically, Invisalign may not even be an option.
Straightening your teeth to improve your smile and overall oral health should not be taken lightly. If you need help deciding whether braces or Invisalign makes more sense for you or your child, consult an experienced specialist

EXPANDER INSTRUCTIONS

Expander Instructions

The Expander appliance we inserted in your mouth is non-removable and is designed to expand (widen) the palate.  Its purpose is to correct a cross-bite, thus improving the way your top and bottom teeth meet.
The “key” that we gave you fits into the center of the appliance.  After inserting it into the hole push it all the way to the back.  It is important that you move the key as far back as it will go or it will be difficult to find the hole the next time.  Either you or one of your parents can turn the expansion screw with the key.
The schedule for turning the appliance is as follows:
__________ One turn daily, more or less at the same time each day
__________ Two turns daily, one in the morning and one after dinner
*  Please follow the suggested schedule.  Too many turns may cause discomfort.  Too few turns may not produce the desired result.
*  It is normal to feel some tightness or discomfort after each turn.  If necessary, take an Aspirin, Advil or Tylenol and/or rinse with warm salt water.  However, if the pain persists, becomes severe or causes dizziness, stop turning the appliance and call the office.
*  A fairly large space will open between the upper front teeth as you continue opening the appliance. Don’t be alarmed – it means that everything is working!!! Once you’ve stopped widening the appliance, the space will close naturally over the next few weeks.
*  After meals and snacks, brush around the appliance and then gargle your mouth.  It is important to keep the area clean in order to avoid an infection.  A Water-Pik can be very helpful to clean this appliance and braces.
*  Although it is rare, if the expansion appliance becomes partially detached from your teeth, stop turning the appliance, keep it in place as best as you can and call our office as soon as possible during office hours.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.

Step 1  In a well-lit area tip the patients's head back.

Step 2  Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place.

Step 3 Pushing the key towards the back of the mouth, yhou will notice the fender will rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.

Step 4 By pushing back and down towards the tongue, remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.

ADVANTAGES OF DAMON SYSTEM

The Advantages of Damon Braces

Damon system braces are a relatively new orthodontic treatment. While they cost somewhat more than standard metal braces, they do have quite a few advantages that may make them a option worth considering.
What Are Damon Braces?
The Damon system is an orthodontic treatment that uses self-ligating braces. This means that rather than attaching the arch wire to the brackets with elastic ligatures, the brackets themselves have a component that closes around the wire to keep it attached.
What Are the Advantages of This System?
The advantages of a self-ligating system over standard braces are significant. Aesthetically, metal Damon system brackets are less noticeable than the brackets of traditional metal braces. But since both conventional and Damon system braces now come in clear versions for the image conscious, this argument is not as persuasive as it might once have been.
What can't be easily overlooked, however, is the reduced treatment time that can be experienced using the Damon system. In a comparative study, Damon patients had treatment times that were more than a half a year shorter than patients with traditional metal braces. Damon patients had 47.8 percent fewer appointments as compared to the metal braces group in order to get their smiles looking great.
Because no friction is involved by using elastic or metal ligatures, your teeth can slide more freely, thus shortening the treatment time, as well as causing less pain during treatment.
The elastics associated with conventional braces can also accumulate bacteria and plaque and often become discolored with different foods and beverages. By eliminating these ligatures, the Damon system can lead to better oral health during orthodontic treatment, making your smile that much healthier when the braces come off.
Is It Worth It?
Consult with your orthodontist to determine whether Damon braces are a good option for you, whether your insurance will cover the treatment and whether you can both agree that the treatment is worth the extra cost. Whichever treatment you choose, the smile that results will be more than worth the time and money invested in creating it.

Types of Retainers

Types of Retainers

Mother and son.
One day in the not-too-distant future, your braces will come off. In a few moments, you'll be free of bands and brackets, able to eat what you want and run your tongue over smooth, clean teeth. But, even on this happy occasion, please remember that you're not quite done with orthodontic treatment yet: The next phase, called retention, is just beginning.
Retention is a critical follow-through stage that typically involves wearing an orthodontic appliance called a retainer. Several different kinds of retainers are available, all of which are custom-made just for you. We will recommend the type (or types) that will work best in your situation, and we'll tell you exactly when and how long you need to wear them.
But if your teeth are straight now, why do you need a retainer at all? Simply put, it's because if you don't wear one, your teeth will start moving right back to where they were!
Teeth aren't set rigidly in the jawbone — instead, they're held in place by a network of fibers called the periodontal ligaments. After they have being moved, it takes several months for the periodontal ligament to adjust to the new position. So if you want to keep that new smile — and not waste all the time, effort, and money it took to get it — it's essential to wear your retainer as directed.
Being fitted for a retainer usually happens on the same day your braces are removed. After your teeth are thoroughly cleaned, we may take another set of X-rays and/or bite impressions, to check how well your braces worked and to see how much your wisdom teeth have developed. Then, we'll discuss your retainer and start getting it ready.

Three Types of Retainers

Types of orthodontic retainers.
There are three basic types of retainers available today; each works best in particular situations. The most common is the so-called “Hawley” retainer — a thin, tongue-shaped piece of acrylic molded to fit your mouth, with a wire that holds your teeth in position. The Hawley retainer is simple, durable and easily removed. It's even possible to personalize it by choosing different colors and designs for the plastic arch. It can also be adjusted to correct minor tooth movements.
Another popular style of retainer is the clear aligner-type, which looks similar to the Invisalign® tray system. These retainers are custom-made of thin, transparent plastic which is designed to fit precisely over your teeth. Their main advantage is that they're invisible, with no wire to show. These retainers are also easy to remove, but they may be somewhat less durable than the Hawleys. They aren't recommended for patients with certain conditions, like teeth grinding.
Finally, fixed retainers may be an option for some people, especially on the lower front teeth. As their name implies, they aren't removable by the wearer — but they aren't visible either. This system uses a wire which is bonded to the tongue side of the teeth. It may remain in place for months, or longer. This type of retainer is sometimes recommended when there's a high risk that teeth could revert to their former position.

A Period of Adjustment

After a short time, most people adjust quite well to wearing a retainer. Some may find that they produce more saliva than usual for a day or so after first wearing any type of retainer — a normal reaction to a foreign object in the mouth. You may also find it a little harder to talk normally at first, but that problem will soon disappear. Of course, removable retainers should always be taken out when you eat or brush your teeth — a big change from braces!

Maintaining — and Retaining — Your Retainer

  1. Wear your retainer only at night unless told otherwise.
  2. Keep youre retainer in its case when not in use.
Do NOT place your retainer in a napkin. ALWAYS brush your retainer with toothpase when you take it out. You may also soak your retainer in half Listerine and half water for a few minutes each day. ALWAYS place your retainer back into its case when not in use.
To stay fresh and germ-free, all retainers need proper cleaning. A Hawley-type retainer can be brushed gently with a regular toothbrush — but a brush may scratch the clear aligner types. Denture cleaners, in powder or tablet form, as well as special retainer cleaners, can be used to clean most removable retainers. Fixed retainers are cleaned by brushing and flossing; a floss threader or interproximal brush can also be a helpful cleaning tool when needed.
Finally, remember to always carry — and use — a retainer case. You'd be surprised how many retainers end up folded in a napkin and accidentally discarded! Also, don't expose your retainer to excess heat by washing it in very hot water or leaving it on a heater: That can cause the retainer to warp and make it unusable. With proper care and conscientious use, a retainer can help you transition from braces to a permanent, healthy smile.
